Levels and prerequisites

Three levels to progress at your own pace.

A number of prerequisites must be mastered to join a given class level. Before moving up, ask your teacher to validate the move so you do not end up facing a level that is too difficult. The teacher may ask you to perform some figures seen in class or to answer a few technical questions.

Moving up too fast does not necessarily mean progressing: building solid foundations is essential to learn new movements in good conditions. A student who joins a class too early may be refused access to it.

Here is the list of the minimum concepts to master for each level:

Level 1: discover and feel

  • Discovery of the most common movements
  • Essential figures and basic turns
  • Getting your body used to dancing
  • Gaining ease, coordination and confidence
  • Understanding the logic of the dance
  • Building the basics

Level 2: understand and connect

  • Posture, breathing and elegance
  • Connection: active/passive frame, common mistakes, turning techniques
  • Positions: open, semi-closed, closed
  • Movements: inside and outside turns, Box Step, Bass Step, Touch and Go, Chassé Step
  • Figures: Wrap Turn, Hammerlock, Simple Turn, Around the Karate, Broche…
  • Musical ear: recognising sections and instruments and understanding the music
  • Dancing with confidence, connection and fluidity

Level 3: master and express

  • Refining posture: torso, hips, legs, support
  • Advanced technique: spotting, continuous active frame, preparing turns, lead & follow
  • Advanced connections: shadow position…
  • Advanced turns: double turn, prep turn, turns on counts 3 and 7, advanced inside/outside versions
  • Enriched footwork: Madrid, Sincopados, rhythmic variations, hip work
  • Creative movements: arm play, Elbow, Fireworks, hip roll, slides…
  • Musical interpretation: song structure, styles, emotions
  • Creating a fluid, technical and musical dance, expressing your personality

After level 3: find your style
